AI Search Statistics 2026:who ChatGPT and Google AI actually recommend
I asked ChatGPT and Google AI the same thing a customer would, 176 times, across 22 cities and 8 industries: who should I hire near me? Then I logged every source they cited. Here is what the machines lean on when they pick who to name.
The short version: AI does not send local buyers to directories. It sends them to real business websites and to Google Maps. Below is the full breakdown, and what it means for getting your business found.

Shares are of 1,189 total citations across 176 AI answers. Every answer named at least one source, so there were no blanks to throw out.
What this means for getting found
For years the advice was to plaster your business across every directory you could find. The data says that ship has mostly sailed. When an AI answer recommends a local business, it is reading that business's own site far more than any directory. If your site is thin, slow, or says little about what you do and where, you are handing the answer to the competitor whose site says it better. Asite built to rankis now the asset the machines quote from.
Google Maps was the single most cited source in the whole study, ahead of every directory combined. That tracks with how people search on a phone. If yourGoogle Business Profileis missing, unverified, or filled out wrong, you are invisible in the one place AI trusts most.
None of this is a trick. It is the same steadylocal SEOwork that has always mattered, pointed at a new place people ask for recommendations. Get your site and your profile right, and you show up whether the answer comes from Google or from a chatbot. Thecase studiesshow what that work looks like in practice.
How I ran the study
I built 88 buyer style prompts, the kind of thing a real person types when they want a recommendation, and ran each through two engines that show their sources: ChatGPT, using OpenAI web search, and Google AI, using Gemini with Google grounding, for 176 answers in all. The markets spanned 22 US cities and 8 industries, from spray foam insulation to cosmetic dentistry to pest control. For every answer I pulled each cited domain and sorted it into a bucket: the business's own site, a directory, Google Maps, an editorial list, social, or news.
This is one snapshot, taken in August 2026. AI answers shift, so I re-run it and update the numbers on this page rather than starting a new one. If you want the raw methodology or want to cite a figure, reach out and I will send it over.
AI search, answered
Do AI search tools recommend businesses from directories like Angi or Yelp?
Mostly no. In a 2026 study of 176 AI answers across 22 US markets, only 7.9% of the sources ChatGPT and Google AI cited were directories. 73.8% were individual business websites and 12% were Google Maps.
What do ChatGPT and Google AI cite most when recommending a local business?
The business's own website. It was the single largest source at 73.8% of all citations, followed by Google Maps at 12%. Directories, social media, and news made up the rest.
How do I get my business recommended by AI search?
Make your own website strong and specific about what you do and where, and get your Google Business Profile set up right. Those are the two sources AI cites most, so they are where you need to be present and accurate.
Is Google Maps important for AI search visibility?
Yes. Google Maps was the single most cited source in the study, ahead of every major directory combined. A complete, verified Google Business Profile is one of the highest-leverage things a local business can do for AI visibility.
